The proposed Library and Community Building forms the centrepiece of the Morisset Town Hub. The concept is designed to nurture local culture and invigorate the town by articulating a context that enables surrounding development.
The design symbolically prioritises the community as the town’s focus. A layered urban design response establishes a place of delight where community amenity, pedestrian linkages, heritage, sustainability and topography combine to define an inclusive and locally relevant town heart.
A public thoroughfare bisects the building, following the contours to make a steeply sloping site accessible. It connects a traditional shopping street to a recent shopping complex via a new town square activated by a café and retail.
The library features a reading terrace to activate a key street corner. Above the library, community spaces spill onto a roof terrace. Its outlook to the Watagan mountains folds the regional landscape into the user experience.
A new hall replaces a dilapidated Memorial Hall, subtly echoing the original’s location and elevation. Concrete walls textured with timber grain interpret the town’s timber-getting origins. Timber louvres and vegetation shade the building and draws dappled light into the interior. The materiality creates a soft monumentality that expresses a commitment to sustainability and the town’s heritage.
