The Marion Cultural Centre, the “heart“ of the city of Marion in Adelaide, South Australia, was completed in November 2001. Both through the use of the city's name and the flow of design elements, the architectural team worked to create a very tangible civic landmark for Marion.

ARM has given the Cultural Centre a unique sense of place by incorporating the word “Marion” into the facade and external features of the building, providing a connecting theme for residents and visitors.

The Cultural Centre meets the functional needs of the community through the provision of a library, art gallery, a multi-function performance space, cafe and meeting rooms.

The energy efficient design of the Marion Cultural Centre incorporates a storm water retention system that allows surface run-off to be stored, filtered on site, then pumped into the ground to replenish the aquifer under Adelaide. The Centre also features a solar hot water system, water efficient fixtures and fittings, energy efficient artificial lighting, low energy evaporative systems and economy cycle air conditioning – even the external landscaping is low maintenance and water efficient.

The architects were linked with the project managers, sub-consultants and Marion Council by the Internet-based project management to ensure tight and responsive management during the construction process. Considerable community consultation also has gone into the design of the building to create a sense of identity that truly reflects the City of Marion.

The $8.5m Cultural Centre was successfully completed within budget and within the agreed time frame.
